Conciliation - the INspectors Arrive for #2 Meeting Thursday 15 October 1998.  15:45 PM

The Police arrived at 2:30 PM as arranged this morning.

The meeting was interesting.  A slightly higher level of intensity than last weeks meeting.

I asked a number of procedural questions and raised a few interesting questions in relation to ratifying some of the comments made last week.  I'll be further reporting on this later.

They very much wanted me to sign off the Complaints Conciliation form today, and suggested I select the "Satisfied with result, No further action required."

But something wasn't right.  The Det Insp made a comment that he interviewed Sen. Const Bent the other day.  I asked how that went.  He said that Bent listened to what was being said and understood that some kind of additional training was to be arranged.

I asked whether any questions were raised to Bent about what actually took place on the day, what DoCS had said to Bent at the end of the street (remember the video segment?)

He said not a lot really.

I asked had Bent seen the TV broadcast, he indicated Bent had seen some of it, and I asked how he felt about that as a fact.

The answer was what set me off and made me curious.  He said Bent had not really shown any concern, didn't say anything "really."

I guess this tells me a lot about Bent.

I asked if I could have a meeting with Bent at some stage in the next 14 days.   This question was raised three or four times and went from "maybe" to "definitely not."

I'm still concerned about closing this matter, but at the same time I don't want to get the Ombudsman involved in something I'm quite capable of handling.  Then again, maybe one has to use the powers that one has to gain a suitable result?   HAVE YOUR SAY

Oh yes, they also asked about obtaining a copy of the video tape.  I indicated we weren't releasing any copies in the next ten days whilst we make some decisions. But they could if they wished, view it on the Internet in segments.  The Det Insp made the comment that it seemed silly that the video was on the Internet but we'd not provide one immediately.  Hmmm.  I don't think it's silly.  Do you?
